WHAT IS SIWES?
ANSWER: SIWES means Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

HOW AND WHEN WAS SIWES ESTABLISHED?
ANSWER: SIWES was established in 1973 by ITF to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of Higher institutions.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: The Students indusrial work experience scheme ( SIWES ) exposes students of tertiary institution to industry based-skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom (theory) to the world of work (practicals). It affords students of higher learning the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery which are usually not available in the schools.



WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: You need to participate because participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of Nigerian government.


WHO ARE THE BENEFICIARIES OF SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: The beneficiaries of SIWES includes Undergraduate students of the following courses:
Agriculture
Engineering
Technology
Environmental
Science
Education
Medical Science and
Pure and Applied Sciences.


WHAT IS THE DURATION OF SIWES/IT?
ANSWER: The duration of SIWES/IT are as follows:
Four months for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and
Six months for the Universities Undergraduates.


WHO IS FUNDING SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: Funding is by the Federal Government of Nigeria

HOW MANY INSTITUTIONS ARE PARTICIPATING IN SIWES/IT?
ANSWER: The number of SIWES(Industrial Training) participating institutions are as follows:
Universities 59
Polytechnics 85
Colleges of Education 62
TOTAL 206

WHO ARE THE OPERATORS OF SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: The operators of Students indusrial work experience scheme ( SIWES ) is the ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE), employers of labour and the institutions.

ITF means Industrial Training Fund (For those who don't know)

HOW MUCH DOES GOVERNMENT PAY SUDENTS ON IT/ SIWES?
ANSWER: The current allowance approved by the Federal Government for SIWES Programme are:

Students - N2,500.00 per student per month.
Supervisory - N 250.00 per student per month.


WILL THERE AN INSPECTION ON IT/SIWES?
ANSWER: Yes, there will be inspections.


WHO WILL INSPECT?
ANSWER: The following offices will inspect SIWES students:
ITF officials, Directorate officials and Lecturers of the Institutions.


CAN ONE REPEAT THE SIWES PROGRAMME?
ANSWER: Yes, one can repeat SIWES if he/she fail due to absenteeism, poor presentation of IT report, bad report from employers etc.


CAN I UNDERTAKE SIWES ABROAD?
ANSWER: Yes, you can but there are some certain conditions that you must meet before approval is given to undertake SIWES abroad. Find out details about the conditions from the Directorate.

WHAT IS THE CREDIT LOAD OF SIWES?
ANSWER: Normally in Universities, one credit unit is assigned to each month of training i.e. a 6-month SIWES carries 6 credit units. While A 3-month SIWES duration carries 3 credit units.


HOW WOULD STUDENTS ON SIWES BE ACCESSED?
ANSWER: Students on SIWES programme shall be assessed using the following criteria and weighting.

i. Employers Rating – 30%
This will include the assessment of student’s attitude to work, punctuality and attendance etc.
ii. Institution’s Supervisors Rating – 20%
The Supervisors are expected to determine the student’s application of theory to practice.
iii. IT/SIWES Technical Report – 20%
The SIWES technical team of the Schools shall examine the students SIWES report and grade accordingly.
iv. Log-Book – 10%
The SIWES technical team of the department shall examine the students’ log-book and grade accordingly.

v. Oral Interview or Seminar by Students – 20%
